In February 2009 we redeveloped and designed two of Virgin Media’s biggest web properties – the user-generated-content (UGC) competition websites for Virgin Media Shorts and Virgin Media Road to V. Virgin Media Shorts is a competition for aspiring filmmakers and Virgin Media Road to V is a competition for unsigned musicians to get their music heard.
We developed a single UGC platform for both competitions in order to cost-effectively deliver more features via our content management framework, Symphony. The new sites allow users the chance to become part of the experience through customisation - by embedding and sharing video and audio content within their personal pages and social networks. Users could also download widgets that indicate they are fans of a given band or filmmaker, which drove other users to visit the site and vote.
Symphony provided a high-availability and cloud enabled environment created especially to host the project. Airlock also supplied video and audio support for mobile, transcoding content on demand for download to mobile devices.
